ACPD Makes Accident Reports Available Online

– The Arlington County Police Department is digitizing accident reports through a partnership with the Carfax Police Crash Assistance Program. The reports are stored electronically in a secure database and will be available for purchase on the Police website at www.arlingtonva.us/police
beginning on September 7, 2012.
Citizens and insurance companies may purchase the accident reports online for incidents occurring on or after September 1, 2012. Reports will be available within 5-7 business days after the accident.
Citizens will continue to have the option of coming to the Police Department to obtain a copy of the accident report at the Records Management Unit during normal business hours or by requesting the report through U.S. mail.
Filing electronic accident reports will reduce overhead costs for the Arlington County Police Department. On average, police departments spend $35,000 annually to reproduce accident reports through a manual system. The new arrangement virtually eliminates this cost, along with the administrative staff time spent fulfilling each request.
Equally important, public access to accident reports has become more efficient. Reports desired by involved parties and insurance companies are now easily obtained online within minutes.
