Arlington Public Schools & Arlington County to Collaborate in Considering New School on Wilson Boulevard Property

Officials from Arlington Public Schools (APS) and Arlington County today announced that APS has decided to retain its Wilson Boulevard property in western Rosslyn for possible redevelopment as a new secondary school. The Wilson property is part of the Western Rosslyn Area Planning Study (WRAPS).

Arlington County Honors Outstanding Park Volunteers

The Arlington County Board today honored the 2013 Bill Thomas Outstanding Park Service Volunteer Award winners during the Board's April Recessed Board Meeting. Keith Fred, a dog park advocate, and Peter Jones, an avid gardener, won individual awards. Arlington Regional Master Naturalist (ARMN) won the organizational award in recognition of their support for Arlington’s natural environment for the past seven years.

Arlington County Board Adopts FY 2015 Budget

The Arlington County Board today adopted a $1.15 billion General Fund Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015, cutting one cent off the real estate tax rate while adding funding for schools and year-round yard waste pickup to the County Manager's Proposed Budget. The Board maintained the County's commitment to keeping Arlington Public Schools among the nation's finest. It provided a total of $440.6 million to Schools for the FY 2015 Budget, adding $19.6 million to base funding and another $8.4 million for school construction or other one-time expenses.

Arlington County Recognizes 18 Notable Trees and their Caregivers

A Tree City USA designee for 18 years, Arlington is home to thousands of exceptional trees. At today's Arlington County Board meeting, Arlington honored 18 new Notable Trees, and their caretakers. This year's Arbor Day ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2 p.m. at Barcroft Elementary School, 625 South Wakefield St., in Arlington. Arlington will receive its 18th consecutive "Tree City USA" award from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Arlington Certifies First Two Commercial Buildings for First Responder Network

Chairman Jay Fisette and Arlington’s public safety chiefs today presented Monday Properties (for 1812 N. Moore Street) and Penzance (for 3001/3003 Washington Blvd.) with the County’s first certifications for public safety operable communications within a commercial building. The installation of the First Responder Network enables public safety officials – including fire, rescue, and police – to communicate within the building during any emergency.

Arlington Board, Manager Work to Include Employee Merit Step Increases in FY 2015 Budget

In a statement, Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette announces the County Board's intent to include employee merit step increases in the FY 2015 Budget, while maintaining a one-cent real estate tax reduction. The inclusion is funded largely by hiring slowdown and elimination of proposed positions. The change reflects concern over higher employee expenses for health care.
