The U.S. Department of Justice has recognized the Arlington County Detention Facility as the first jail in the National Capital Region to meet national Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. The measures were established two years ago by a federal commission.

Jane Rudolph will join Arlington County as Director of the Dept. of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Ms. Rudolph spent almost 10 years in the New York City Dept. of Parks and Recreation, serving as Chief of Staff and overseeing all aspects of the largest urban parks system in the nation. She will begin her service with the County on Jan. 7, 2013; she and her family are Arlington residents.

Arlington’s new planning director, Robert J. Duffy, AICP, is bringing his expertise and support for community-based planning and engagement to the County. During his professional planning career, Duffy has been committed to a number of essential planning principles and priorities such as sustainable land use planning and smart growth; neighborhood conservation; transit-oriented communities and neighborhoods; green and complete streets; place making; equitable housing opportunities and choices; and context-based urban planning and design.

County Manager Barbara Donnellan today named Greg Emanuel Director of the Department of Environmental Services (DES), effective August 13, 2012. Mr. Emanuel most recently served as Deputy Director for the department and has extensive engineering and leadership experience. Mr. Emanuel resides with his family in Arlington.

Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hughes Hynes today named the development of a blueprint for deeper, broader civic engagement as her top priority in 2012. Hynes unveiled her “PLACE -- Participation, Leadership And Civic Engagement” initiative, saying it will provide a much-needed update to the County’s long-cherished “Arlington Way” of public participation in government decision-making.
