Arlington Arts Granted $249,077 in financial support for FY 2012

  • County Board approves 25 grant requests
  • All grants made to non-profit arts organizations
  • Signature, Synetic theatres top grant recipients
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Board today approved 25 grants to arts organizations, with amounts ranging from a high of $44,625.14 each to support Signature and Synetic theaters, to $274.79 to the ProBolivian Committee.

“Arlington has a thriving, vibrant, diverse arts community that brings not only economic benefit, but cultural enrichment, diversity and joy to our County,” said County Board Chairman Christopher Zimmerman. “The County views support of the arts as an important priority, and the Board is pleased to be able to make this contribution.”

The Board accepted the recommendations of the Arlington Commission for the Arts, in keeping with the County’s “Policy for the Support of Arts Organizations and Artists,” adopted in December 1990 by the County Board. The policy authorizes the commission to decide on grants of facilities and technical services and make recommendations to the Board on direct financial support to Arlington arts organizations and artists.

The Board voted unanimously to approve the grants.

Background

The Commission received 52 direct financial support applications for FY 2012, requesting $1.023 million, in addition to requests for facilities and technical services. Fifty of the applications came from non-profit arts organizations, and two were from artists.

All potential grantees must submit applications to the Commission. The applications are reviewed by advisory panels of art experts and County staff. The Commission reviewed each application, then made its recommendation to the County Board. The Commission recommended 22 General Operating Grants, meant to assist organizations with the expenses involved with overall administration and program offerings, and three projects grants to support specific projects.
