Arlington County Breaks Ground for Rosslyn Station Project

  • $32.6 million station expansion to help meet transit needs
  • New entrance, high-speed elevators, safety improvements for Virginia’s busiest Metrorail Station
  • Project slated for completion in Spring 2013
ARLINGTON, Va. – Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette and other County officials broke ground today for the Rosslyn Station Project with Sen. Jim Webb, federal, state and local transportation officials, construction partner The JBG Companies, and Rosslyn community members.

Participants gathered directly across from the Rosslyn Metro entrance on N. Moore Street to kick-off the nearly three-year long project.  Monday Properties broke ground nearby last Thursday on the 35-story 1812 N. Moore Street development.

“We’re seeing a more dynamic, exciting Rosslyn take shape, and an improved Rosslyn Station is part of that rebirth,” said County Board Chairman Jay Fisette. “Arlington is investing in much-needed safety and accessibility improvements to the Station to better meet the growing demand for transit in our region.” (Also view video clip with Senator Jim Webb.)

Rosslyn Station Project

The $32.6 million station expansion is funded by a range of federal, state, and local sources including developer contributions and the County’s commercial real estate tax created two years ago to help fund transportation projects in the County. All of these sources have proven essential to advancing this project to construction.

Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette, other officials join Sen. Jim Webb at Rosslyn Station groundbreaking.

“With this additional entrance, the capacity to move people in and out of the station will increase by about 2,000 passengers per hour,” said County Board Vice-Chairman Chris Zimmerman. Zimmerman represents Arlington on the Metro Board. “This is critical to the success of Rosslyn in the years ahead, both in terms of accommodating development plans now in place, and for minimizing traffic congestion and air pollution.”

When complete, this second entrance will add three new high speed, high capacity elevators, an emergency exit stairwell, and another station entrance and connecting passageway. A new kiosk, fare collection equipment and fare vending machines also will be added to the station to better facilitate transactions and improve the overall rider experience.

Station expansion is a public-private partnership

Partners on the project include the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services, JBG Companies, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the Federal Department of Transportation. Also involved are Clark Construction Group, LLC and Arlington’s construction manager, STV.
