Citing the tragedy in Prince George’s County, where five adults apparently were killed Tuesday by carbon monoxide poisoning in an Oxon Hills home, Arlington County Chief Fire Marshal Daniel Fitch urged residents to buy, install and maintain life-saving carbon monoxide alarms.

A former teacher with a passion for urban agriculture and a garden club that founded and nurtures Rock Spring Park are the winners of Arlington County’s 2011 Bill Thomas Outstanding Park Service Volunteers Award. The award honors volunteers who make lasting contributions to Arlington’s parks and open spaces.

Arlington County honored nine “Notable” trees and their caretakers at today’s Board meeting. The Notable Tree Program is an initiative of the Arlington Beautification Committee that recognizes residents who maintain and preserve outstanding trees.

The County Board today approved a Use Permit for Westover Farmer’s Market, a new open-air market that will bring locally grown produce and other locally produced products to the Westover Village neighborhood. The market will open on May 6.

The Arlington County Board today adopted a $1.052 billion General Fund Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 that includes a 1.3-cent increase in the real estate tax rate and additional funding for affordable housing, maintenance of County-owned facilities and infrastructure, employee compensation and core services.
