Ten Projects Win 2011 DESIGNArlington Awards

- Board recognizes, honors outstanding design
- Distinctive architectural and landscape projects selected
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Board today recognized the ten 2011 DESIGNArlington award-winners, honoring their achievements in outstanding architectural or landscape design in the County.
“These awards underscore that in Arlington, design matters,” said Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hughes Hynes. “Transit-oriented development doesn’t have to be boring or uniform. Through this award program, the County has encouraged developers, property owners and architectural design experts to compete or be a part of the selection process, and raised the game on design in Arlington.”
An independent jury of four noted design professionals selected the DESIGNArlington 2011 winners. The jurors were:
- Sunny Scully Alsup, Principal Emeritus of Lewis Scully Gionet.
- Journalist and author Deborah Dietsch covers architecture, art, and design. The former editor-in-chief of Architecture magazine, she is a frequent contributor to The Washington Post, the Washington Business Journal's OnSite magazine and Home and Design magazine.
- Mary Oehrlein, FAIA, Historic Preservation Officer, Architect of the Capitol. Formerly the owner and principal of Oehrlein & Associates Architects.
- Lee Quill, FAIA, CNU, Principal of Cunningham | Quill Architects
Thirty-eight projects were submitted in this second year of the program. The award honorees range from single- and multi-family residential buildings to well-known civic and institutional buildings, as well as a creative open space. (See a PDF with photos of the award-winning projects.)
